An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is a creature that has developed to the fullest extent. The term adult is applied to humans to mean social and legal concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor", a legal adult has reached the age of majority, and therefore is regarded as independent, self-sufficient, and accountable. An adult who is legally mature can be called a major. Age 18 is an adult legal age however, this definition may differ depending on the country, rights of the law or psychological development.

Adulthood refers to the period in human life when an individual has reached maturation in both physical and mental growth. It usually starts when a person reaches 21, which is the average age for adults. The age of old is 60 years old after middle years. Adulthood is divided into three phases that are: the early years of adulthood (18-mid-30s) between mid-30s and the mid-60s and the final stage of adulthood, mid-60s to end of life. By the time we reach early adulthood (20 to mid-40s) our physical growth has been completed, however our weight and height may increase slightly. As we grow older, we are at the peak of our physical capabilities.
